My Own Random Thoughts

While getting ready to attend my youngest son's high school graduation on Thursday this week, I couldn't help but think about how much technology has changed since I was in school.  Way back when, if you needed to research an assignment, you had to spend the day in the library looking through the card catalog, looking on the shelves for books, and taking lots and lots of notes and hoping you got it all down right! Twenty years later, when I went back to college, computers were the way to go!  Everything you may, or may not, need to know was at our fingertips.  Or so we thought.  Now, technology has evolved a bit more and we have more computing power in our pocket than those computers I used just ten short years ago. In my last post, I wrote that I used Bing and Pinterest to find information. I prefer Pinterest to find information because it doesn't seem like you have to scroll through several advertisements and dozens and dozens of sites that I don't want to find the answers I do want!  Pinterest allows me to see a snapshot of the site before I click.  I know, I know, Google offers the same snapshot of the sites, but the pictures get me every time! After reading some of my classmates blogs, I saw that some of you investigated Feedly.  I had a look around Feedly, and I believe it has lots to offer as well.  Feedly seems to be a bit more organized than Pinterest. Feedly has a summary of the sites they are linked to and has pictures too!  I think Feedly just might be the best of both worlds,

Well it looks like I will be commenting on your blog 2 weeks in a row. For the last blog one of the classmates I was to comment on, did not get his posted until late the 29th, so I picked you to fill in. As I mentioned last week I do not use Pinterest much, but on your recommendation I will take a 2nd look. From the sound on your blog I should also look at Feedly. Your recommendations are helpful. Maybe you could do a comparison on sites that are similar to Pinterest. You would then know the very best site and I would too because you would tell us all about it in your blog.
I completely relate to your history with computers. I remember the days of exhaustive library searches and writing endless note cards. Typing and retyping because I missed a line, ugh. I am sure I would not have been able to get through college, after such a long absence, without the convenience of the internet and word processing programs now available to me. I also love my smart phone. Not only does it allow me to look up the phone number of a business I need to contact, but it will dial it for me too. I need to gather more computer knowledge and practice, practice, practice. As much as I like reading I will learn faster if I do the task. I certainly don’t get such service from my kids, at least not yet. They don’t seem to have the patience to help mom with tech issues.

  2. I can personally relate to your experience and I appreciate how you connect the evolution of technology, its importance and the things it brought up to your life. I believe that not only ease to work or time efficiency are the factors that technology has given us, it also allow some change and embraces innovation that people might have not noticed. To think it deeper, perhaps you might personally relate the technology to this course or to your present goals. Does technology has been considered as hindrance or a key to your success? It is to further address the future things that technology might bring to you and to prepare from its cause and effect in the long run.

  3. I like the connections you are making from your life to your current explorations with technology. I will admit to spending too many hours on Pinterest. Feedly does have some very nice visual interface options. The nice thing about Feedly is that you can follow anything with an RSS feed, whereas Pinterest you follow people's boards. I look forward to reading more about your experiences with Feedly and other technologies.
